Licenses/Registration
Driver's Licenses—New residents must
obtain
a state driver s license within 30 days of establishing
residency; please bring your out-ofstate
license and your Social Security card.
Those with a current license must pass an eye
exam and turn in the old license. Those without
a current license must pass a written,
road and eye test. The fee is $5 for the test
and $23 for the license. Tests are given at the
Probate Office of the Baldwin County
Courthouse in Foley on Mon., Tues., Thu. and
Fri. Call for testing hours. 943-5061.
Marriage Licenses—Marriage licenses
must be
purchased at the Baldwin County Courthouse in
Bay Minette Mon. Fri. between 8:00 a.m. and
4:30 p.m. Please bring your out of state license
and social security card. The charge for the
license is $40, $58 if the ceremony is performed
at the courthouse.
Vehicle Registration—New residents are
required to license their autos, pickup trucks,
motorcycles, trailers and motor homes within
30 days of establishing residency. Vehicles
may be registered at the Baldwin County
Satellite Courthouse Mon. Fri. 8 4:30. Call the
courthouse for information about the documentation
that is required upon registering;
vehicle and title must be present to register.
A $1.25 issuance fee is charged for each vehicle
in addition to the annual rates below:
Autos, Pickup Trucks—$24.25
Motorcycle—$15.00
Utility Trailer—$12.00
Motor Homes—$23.00 $500.00
(Rate based upon gross weight.)
Private cars and pickup trucks for personal
use are taxed at 15% of the fair market value.
Alabama requires automobile insurance.
There is no State Vehicle Inspection requirement.
Boat Registration—New residents must
bring
the registration receipt from the previous
state. Fees are based on boat length; call
943-5061 for information.
Voter Registration—You may register
to vote
at the Baldwin County Satellite Courthouse in
Foley, Mon. Fri. 8 4:30. The Board of Registrars
also provides monthly mobile voter registration
throughout the county at various locations
and dates. Call the Board of Registrars,

Medical Services
Area hospitals offer 24-hour emergency
care as well as services in general medicine,
surgery and other physician s services.
Numerous physicians, dentists, chiropractors
and optometrists practice in the Gulf Shores
and Orange Beach communities, offering both
family practice and specialized care. The area
has available a nursing home,
hospice services, home-care services, and businesses
which provide home-care medical
equipment. Mental health centers, youth and
social services, and various associations provide
services for psychological, behavioral and
emotional problems.

Services for on-site medical emergency care
are provided by both Gulf Shores and Orange
Beach. Gulf Shores has 12 firemedics and 3 EMS
vehicles, as well as a rescue pumper; Orange
Beach has 15 paramedics and 8 EMS vehicles.
Medstar Ambulance has an ambulance stationed
in each city to provide emergency
transport to hospitals.

Severe Weather
Terms To Know:
Information provided by the Emergency
Management Agency.
Tropical Depression: A cyclone with winds of less than 39
mph or 34 knots.
Tropical Storm: Distinct rotary circulation, constant
wind speed ranges from 39–73 mph.
Hurricane: Pronounced rotary
circulation, constant wind speed of 74 mph
or more.
Hurricane Watch: Issued for
coastal areas when there is a threat of hurricane
conditions within 24–36 hours.
Hurricane Warning: Issued when hurricane conditions
are expected in a specific coastal area within 24 hours.
Tornadoes: Spawned by hurricanes, they can produce
severe damage and casualties.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Indicates that conditions
are right for lightning, damaging winds greater than 58 mph, hail
and/or heavy rain.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Indicates that severe
thunderstorms have been sighted or indicated on radar.

Hurricanes
Hurricane season is June 1 through November 30.
In the event of a hurricane warning and evacuation advisory,
you should prepare to leave the island.
Recommended equipment and supplies
include a battery-operated radio, flashlight, and enough
nonperishable food to last your family three days. You
should evacuate the coast and Baldwin County and travel
north
to the inland counties providing shelter. See Evacuation Route on map,
page 32. The State of Alabama has made arrangements with inland counties
to provide shelter for evacuees. Shelters within the county will be made
available for anyone UNABLE to evacuate the county. The location of these
shelters will
be announced over local radio and television.
As you evacuate, tune to local radio stations along the evacuation route.
The radio
frequencies are normally posted along
major evacuation highways.

Red
Flag Warnings
Take note of flags flying on public beach areas. A red flag means strong
currents, possibly undertows, are present and you should not swim. For
more tide information, call 968-TIDE. If you are caught in a current
or undertow, do not try to swim against the current. Relax your body
as much as possible until the current brings you back to the surface.
Swim parallel to the shore until you are free of the current. Never swim
alone.
Communications
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are served by the Mobile and Pensacola daily
newspapers,
as well as by The Islander, a weekly local
newspaper. The community is served by
affiliates of all major television networks as well as public television
and local independent stations. Cable television is also available in
most areas. Mobile and Pensacola AM/FM radio stations broadcast a variety
of programming including public radio. Local FM radio station, Sunny
105.7 and AM station, WHEP 1310, covers
the coastal area. Gulf Telephone Company
is located in Foley and serves customers in South Baldwin County.
